The word "terrorism" generates different meanings depending on the political and socio-cultural contexts. It can be rationally described as systematic employment of violence to pressurize an authority or community. In the context of Bangladesh, political terrorism largely stems from unhealthy competition among political parties to gain power. Religious terrorism, using violence in the name of religious ideologies, in all its manifestations is one of the most serious security challenges for Bangladesh. On the other hand, ethnic terrorism is rooted in the quest of indigenous minorities to protect their lands from encroachment and to safeguard their own ethnic identity. As consequences of such terrorist activities, different important sectors like energy, transportation, finance, and public health have all become vulnerable. A set of congruent policies is necessary to combat terrorism in Bangladesh. Counter-terrorism should be pursued at the structural and political level, which requires the development and reform of political institutions and law enforcement agencies, to tackle terrorism. In my opinion, terrorism has now become a key concern for not only Bangladesh but also for the whole world.
