The first day of Bangla New Year is Pahela Baishakh. It is one of the most popular public with sweets. It opens a new chapter of life and gives us a rare opportunity for merriment and celebrations in Bangladesh. This day bears a special significance to us as people irrespective of class, religion, creed, and caste celebrate it which helps to strengthen our national unity. Every year this day is celebrated across the country with great enthusiasm. People from all walks of life walk out of their home and throng at a particular place to celebrate this great occasion. The day opens a new Bangladesh calendar and inspires us to start a life with renewed zeal and new pledges. Pahela Baishakh is observed both in towns and villages. Early in the morning men, women, young boys and girls dressed in Panjabi and saree gather around Ramna Botomul and start singing to welcome the sun of the new year. Besides Ramna Batomul, such functions are arranged all over the country. Different cultural functions are also held throughout the day. On this day people take traditional Bengali foods like panta bhat, hilsa fish and green chilly. Different handicraft and pottery items are put on display in Baishakhi Melas upholding our rich cultural heritage. The business community celebrates the day with the opening of 'halkhata' and entertaining of the client's festivity, It lasts for a day but leaves a lasting impression on our mind.
