Cyclone Sidr Paragraph

The word "Sidr" comes from the native language of Sri Lanka. The word means eye'. It was named 'Sidr' because the satellite view of the cyclone taken form high above looked like a big 'eye'. Actually Sidr' is the name of a very severe cyclonic storm. Cyclone 'Sidr destroyed many districts of Bangladesh to its southern part. It hit the coastal areas of Bangladesh with signal number 10 on the dreadful night of November 15, 2007. The storm formed in the central Bay of Bengal and quickly reached its peak with winds of 215 km/h. According to scientist it was a Category-4' tropical cyclone. The storm eventually approached the southern part of Bangladesh on November 15 causing large-scale destruction. Coastal districts of Bangladesh faced heavy rainfall as an early impact of the cyclone. The entire cities of Patuakhali, Barguna and Jhalokati district were hit hard by the storm surge of over 5 meters. The Red Crescent Society reported on November 18 that the number of deaths could be up to 10,000. About a quarter of the world heritage site of Sundarbans was damaged. Researchers said mangrove forest of Sundarbans will take at least 40 years to recover itself from this catastrophe. Electricity and water service all over the country were cut. The local agricultural industry was also devastated, as many rice crops which have a December harvest were lost. Dhaka and other parts of Bangladesh experienced drizzle and gusty winds. Total damages came close to 450 million Dollar. Besides, 8.000 educational institutions have been fully or partly destroyed. Immediate help and relief work was rendered by the government in the affected areas. Necessary steps were taken to rehabilitate the affected people. To reduce the loss from further storms the authority concerned will ensure information about the natural disasters, warn people and shift them to safe places. The young people can help the affected people with rescue operation. They can work for raising awareness among the people living near the coastal areas. They can also join in voluntary work with NGOs and donor agencies. With the effort of all the people Bangladesh will overcome the devastating damages and go on its way to development.
