Dowry system is a harmful practice which the people of our country have been nourishing for long years. Dowry is the large amount of money or property that the bride or her family is bound to give to the bridegroom at the time of marriage. So it is the bridegroom who takes dowry and the bride and her family are the victims of this social vice. Poverty is the main cause of dowry. Due to poverty the bridegroom shamelessly demands money from the bride party. Sometimes we find dowry system in the solvent families too. In such case, the greed of the bridegroom and his family is also the cause of dowry. So dowry is prevalent both in solvent and insolvent families. Basically the malpractice of giving and taking dowry is due to the negative attitude towards women. Women in our society are considered incompetent to men. So in our socio-economic structure dowry is sometimes given and taken as a penalty of the bride to the bridegroom. Moreover, the greed of the bridegroom for getting illegal money is the vital cause of dowry. Dowry system gives birth to various problems in the society. It has so many bad effects. The wives are often tortured and even beaten to death for not bringing dowry. I think, dowry system is very disgraceful for the society and for the humanity. For eliminating downy system the government should apply the anti-dowry rules strictly. The bride, bridegroom or any other person involved in taking or giving dowry must be punished and boycotted by the society. Social awareness should be raised to protest this malpractice. It is a matter of hope that many government and non government organizations are working to get rid of this social curse.
