Bangladesh is called a land of natural calamities because people here live fighting against the natural disasters. The country is prone to natural calamities like flood, cyclone, drought, storms, earthquakes etc. Among these devastating forces of nature, flood is the most common here. Bangladesh is a land of rivers. During the monsoon, the water level rises in the rivers and floods takes place. So floods visit our country almost every year. It usually occurs in the rainy season when there blows monsoon. There are various rainfall and melting of snow in the mountains cause floods. Another vital cause causes of floods. Too much is the silting of rivers. Flood has a destructive effect on our lives and properties. It causes a great havoc to our people. Crops are damaged and washed away by the flood water. It also destroys houses, trees roads and other places. Cattle and other domestic animals die. People have to stay under the open sky. A great number of people die every year due to flood. All communications cut off. After subsiding, flood leaves behind devastated land and crop fields. People also suffer from the want of pure drinking water and food to survive. Various kinds of diseases such as cholera, dysentery and diarrhoea usually break out in an epidemic form. Wide spread damage of crops results in famine. In fact, the sufferings of the people after the flood know no bounds. Specialists believe that the root cause of most of the natural calamities is environmental pollution. To control natural calamities we must improve our environment. People should practice environment friendly behavior. To control flood we can dredge our river beds. More dams should be built to save men and crops from damage. Shelter should be made for the flood affected people. Immediate relief work should be imparted after flood. Foodstuff, clothes, drinking water and medicine should be supplied for the flood hit areas. Though we can not stop flood we can control it to reduce losses.
