It is true that no nation could emerge as an independent nation without struggle or fight for it. So war of independence is a fight against the oppressors or the occupying forces to establish the right for freedom. Through a massive destruction and blood shed a nation may one day occupy a position in the world map. The same thing has happened in case of Bangladesh. It experienced British colonial rule until 1947 and East Pakistani oppression from 1947 to 1971, Bangladesh under the leadership of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman declared war on 26 March in 1971 for in dependence. People from all walks of life joined the war very actively. The occupying forces ravaged the country causing tremendous ruination of towns and cities. They raped thousands of mothers and sisters and massacred more than three million people. After about a nine-month long war the occupied forces surrendered on 16 December. The day has been declared our victory Day. Bangladesh celebrates the days: the 26th March and the 16th December with befitting manner every year. They are public holidays. On these occasions our national flag flies half-mast. Colourful processions are brought out by different political and social organizations. Seminars and symposiums are also held in educational institutions. Different social and political organizations also arrange various programmes to celebrate the days.
