A village fair is a large gathering of the village people. It is an annual affair of the village. It is held in an open place or on the bank of a river or in the year of a temple. Different kinds of goods are brought here for show and sale. A village fair is generally held to celebrate cultural or religious occasions such as Pahela Baishakh, Muharram, the first month of the Hijri year etc. It is also held on the occasion of death anniversary of any saint person. A village fair is a kind of exhibition of hand made things. The rural artisans and craftsmen make various useful articles which are brought to the fair and offered for sale. Small traders come from far and near to sell their goods. They bring clothes of various kinds, ready-made garments, cheap fancy goods, dolls, utensils, cheap sweets and other things which are useful to the villagers. The fancy goods have the greatest demand in a fair. These fancy goods are dolls, ribbons, whistles, fans, magic wires, magic ball etc. People of all classes are fond of the fair. Because, attractive things are available here. The special attractions of a village fair are jarigan, jatra parties, circus parties, magic show, dancing of dolls etc. These are really wonderful. A village fair is very important to the villagers. They wait eagerly for the expected day of the fair. They can not only buy their necessary things at a cheap rate from the fair but also get a chance of removing monotony of life. In fact, a village fair encourages the cottage industries and handicrafts. So, it has a great economic value too. Though a village fair is very attractive to the villagers, it is not free from demerits. There is no proper sanitation in the fair. The sweetmeats and other foods are kept uncovered. Besides, the gamblers spoil the morality of the villagers. Theft and pick pocketing often take place. A village fair is a part and parcel of the village life. It is a great source of entertainment of the villagers. It removes the monotony of works of the village people.
