Every nation has some remarkable days. As an independent nation, Bangladesh is not an exception to it. Our Mother Language Day or 21st February is regarded as a memorable day in the history of Bangladesh. In this day, some of our heroics sacrificed their lives for our mother tongue. So, it is also called the 'Shaheed Day TS day was declared as International Mother Language Day by the UNESCO. Considering the Bangle nationalism and the importance of the day UNESCO declared 21t February as International Mother Language Day. This declaration was made on 17 November 1999. There is a historic background of the day. On 21 March in 1948, the then Pakistani ruler, Mohammad Ali Jinnah declared that only Urdu would be the state language of Pakistan. All classes of people protested against it. In such circumstances, On 21 February in 1952, a general strike was called all over the country. The then government imposed section 144 on that day. On that day some students and public broke the section 144 and brought out a procession from Dhaka University campus. They were advancing towards. When the procession came at the present Shaheed Minar, the police shot on the procession. As a result, many brave sons including Rafiq, Shafiq, Salam, Barkat, Jabbar were martyred. Then the ruling class was compelled to recognize Bangla as a state language. The importance of the declaration to the 215 February as International Mother Language Day is really beyond measure. Through observing it, special importance has been given to mother language of all nations. This world recognition of mother tongue will increase the mutual cooperation among all the nations of the world. Now, 188 countries of the world observe 21s February as International Mother Language Day. The national flag is kept half mast on this day. Everybody holds a black badge. They walk to the Shaheed Minar on bare footed. They offer flowers on the Shaheed Minar. Different organizations arrange cultural functions. Radio and television broadcast special programmes. We express our gratitude to UNESCO as it declared 21st February as International Mother Language Day. The sacrifice of our herolo nation has been dignified all over the world. Now, we can stano with dignity amongst the nation of the world.
