Actually, "Baishakhi Mela" is a very common feature of Pahela Baishakh. Such temporary bazaar exists everywhere throughout the whole country. The largest "Mela" is arranged by Chayanat at the traditional Ramna Batamul. It is held in the early morning of Pahela Baishakh every year. Thousands of people gather to celebrate the day with utmost jollity and enthusism. They wake up very early and eat "Panta Bhat" or watered rice with hilsha fish and dried pepper. They wear colourful dresses and paint their noses and cheeks. They take colourful banners, festoons and placards in their hands. They wear caps which seem to be magical. In the fairs or melas, different types of sweets, toys, decorative pieces, cosmetics, gift items etc. are sold.
On the day of Pahela Baishakh, people pass whole day long with great joy. They forget the sorrows and sufferings of life for the time being. On the day, every family, poor or rich, try to arrange rich food as per capacity. They hope that the joyful moments will linger and continue throughout the year.
Pahela Baishakh is a day of joy and celebration. It is firmly rooted in our tradition. Every year this day comes back with new hopes and aspirations. People wait for it with their utmost interest. When it comes around, all people irrespective of taste and creed welcome it. Various cultural programmes, colourful rallies and processions mark the day. It bears the testimony to the fact we have a culture of our own. Pahela Baishakh is actually a manifestation of our cultural heritage.
