Dowry system has originated from the baseless idea that women are inferior to man. They are believed to be born to serve and even adore men. This idea has resulted from the lack of moral education, high thinking and above all from the mean self-interest. This curse has now got very vicious. This is proved when even educated young men demand a large sum of money or modern vehicles as dowry.
The want of higher education in women is also a great reason for this heinous system. They are usually dependent on the male for their bread and butter. Proper education can save them. They must be educated enough to find a job with a pretty prestigious salary. Indifference to religious and moral obligations has led many to ask for dowry. The young married women are tortured and often divorced for the guardians' failure to fulfil the demands of their husbands.
Dowry system must be stopped in order to prevent oppression on women. The government must strictly implement women torture act. Women should be properly educated. After their marriage, they have to contribute to their family income through honourable jobs. Everybody's moral outlook should be developed. All people must be made aware of the heinousness of dowry system. Necessary public and private organisation should be launched urgently against it. Anti dowry campaign should be immediately and properly started. Above all, poverty alleviation programmes should be conducted more effectively.
Dowry system has become an open curse and sin prevailing in Bangladesh. It is high time we removed it as a civilized nation. Dowry lessens the prestige of women as human beings. We should be careful of the system of gift at marriage ceremony. So the sooner the curse is removed, the better.
