With the passage of time, students are multiplied in our country. So only a few students could have the opportunity of receiving higher education in the state-run universities. A lot of students were deprived of higher education. In this reality, during of the close of the 20th century, a lot of private universities began to grow up in our country. They offered higher education to a great number of students. These universities made a good profit in the education process. This tempted many others to set up private university. Now private universities are mushrooming day by day in our country. The sophisticated areas of Dhaka city are now full of private universities. So the students who fail to get themselves admitted in the state-run universities can have the opportunity of higher education in the private universities.
But education in private universities is very expensive. These universities were set up for a commercial purpose. They impart education only to the rich students. They have mushroomed in the country. But they have not created opportunities for the poor students.
There is also a question about the standard of education in these universities. With the exception of a few, the standard of education in most of the private universities is very poor. As making profit is their only motto, a poor student fails to get himself admitted in these universities. Moreover, there are no qualified teachers in most of them. Once the students get themselves admitted into the private universities, they are sure to get a certificate. So the boys and girls of the rich chiefly aim at getting certificates being themselves admitted into the private universities.
Private universities fail to provide with a normal standard of education. They are often called the shop of selling certificates. This situation has made the intellectuals thinking. They see it as an ill omen. Education should not be regarded as goods. There is no system of supervising these private universities. Some of these universities have their branches in the district level. It is alleged that the students of some private universities adopt unfair means to pass in the examination.
Therefore, time has come to think over the matter. The government must have a control over the system of education in the private universities. The standard of education must b ensured.
