There are various popular media in the world for providing news and views Newspaper, magazine, radio, television, internet etc. are remarkable. People get immediate news with picture on television with the touch of real picture. Moreover, dish antenna brings about a revolutionary in the television broadcasting.
People have due rights to get news from every corner of the world from the free-flowing information. They have more options to know in the backdrop of technological development. Every media competes with one another to be first in the presentation of news and other affairs. It tries to compete effectively. So television broadcasting requires keeping out of government ownership. This will help avoid bureaucratic complexity and disadvantage. Media will then enjoy freedom in broadcasting. Television broadcasting needs some basic requirements. Impartiality is one of them. It is very essential and important in this respect. In a modern civilized society, everybody wants to know everything in a free and fair way.
Television broadcasting becomes biased and partial under a government. It becomes an instrument of official publicity. Most of the people are illiterate and unconscious in Bangladesh. They can neither read newspaper nor take advantage of internet or other technical media. They only depend on television. So television must be impartial, free and fair here. It should telecast all types of news in an objective manner. It should broadcast them keeping a normal flow. But its government ownership hampers it.
Every government tends to take the utmost opportunity in its ownership of television broadcasting. It wants to uphold its own views and news. It always tries to conceal its own weaknesses. The government sometimes gets engaged in activities related to its own vested interest. It goes on even if its actions go against public interests. During the time of public agitation, it seeks ways to hide the real facts. It uses television to for it by twisting information. Television can hardly avoid the government's will and becomes bound to work as a government spokesman. So government ownership of television consequently deprives people of the fact. It misleads them too.
Thus government ownership of television broadcasting has many negative sides. It has no mentionable positive sides. So the concept of government ownership of television broadcasting is misleading. Government may interfere a free and impartial flow of information. The developed and first world countries always believe in an independent and self-governed television broadcasting. Bangladesh must follow this for establishing democracy properly.
