Literature can be classified into five main branches. Poetry, drama, fiction, non-fiction and criticism are these branches. Poetry has two major forms which are subjective and objective. Subjective poetry is also called lyric poetry. It is classified into elegy, sonnet, ode, dramatic monologue, hymn and epithalamion. Objective poetry is of two types — dramatic and narrative. Dramatic poetry has no sub forms. But narrative poetry is sub-divided into epic, ballad and metrical romance. Drama is mainly divided into tragedy and comedy. Tragedy is classified into heroic tragedy, revenge tragedy and Senecan tragedy. But comedy is divided into romantic comedy, comedy of manners, comedy of humours, comedy of ideas, farce, high comedy, low comedy etc. Fiction has at least three sub-genres. It is classified into novel, short story and romance. Novel may be picaresque, physical, historical, social, panoromic, non-fiction, epistolary, regional etc. A very short novel is called novelette. Short story can be divided into love story, adventure story, detective story, psychological story, scientific story or scientific phantasy, social story etc. Non-fiction is generally classified into essay, pamphlet, travelogue, biography and autobiography. Criticism may be archetypal, moralistic, psycho-analytic, sociological, structuralist, stylistics etc. In addition to them, there are many other sub-forms or sub-genres of literature.
