Social values are vanishing day by day from our society in an alarming rate. They are scarcely exercised today. Social values are actually the principles or standards or norms of behaviour of people in a society. Many of them were in our past life. 'Always speak the truth' is such a social value. All religions had the same social values. They may be different in their external rituals. But their essential values are similar. They insist on keeping such values properly. But it is a matter of great regret that they are disappearing rather quickly. The parents are being subjected to the impudence of the children. The elders are being totally disregarded. No value is being given to them for their eldership. These are all signs of degeneration. Many causes are responsible for this. But the most potent and widespread cause is the world-wide propaganda against the old values. It is being done through the mass and electronic media. Mad pursuit of money and sex is turning the whole world into a mad house. Murders are taking place chiefly as a result of this pursuit. Fatal diseases are spreading with uncontrollable speed. AIDS, blood pressure and venereal diseases are a serious threat to the existence of healthy human civilization. The social and family bonds are collapsing day by day. Isolationism, individualism, nihilistic attitude towards all things and the consequent chaos are taking the place of old values. We should try to accept the better values. We have to decide which values are better — old or new. We should also try to protect and keep alive the social values that are vanishing.
