William Shakespeare is the greatest poet and dramatist of the Elizabethan Age (1558-1603). He was probably born at Stratford Upon-Avon on 23 April, 1564. His father was John Shakespeare and mother was Mary Arden. He began to study at a grammar school at Stratford-on-Avon. He learnt Latin and Greek in this school. He fell in love with Anne Hathaway. He married her in 1582. It is believed that he reached London in 1592. However, he first attained success as a dramatist when he wrote Henry IV. Part-I in the same year. He wrote in a succession of widely acclaimed plays over the next twenty years. Richard III was written between 1592-1593. Richard II was composed between 1594-1595 and A Midsummer Night's Dream was written in 1595. In the same year, he became the shareholder of The Lord Chamberlains Men, an acting company that became very popular in those days. The Merchant of Venice was written between 1595-1596. In 1598, Shakespeare wrote Much Ado About Nothing. He wrote Henry V in 1599. In the same year, he got involved in The Globe Theatre. Othello and Hamlet were written in 1602. In 1606, King Lear was written. Antonio and Cleopatra was composed in 1607. The Tempest was his last play. In 1610, Shakespeare had left London for his country. He died on 23 April at his birthplace in 1616. He was buried in the Holy Trinity Church, Stratford-Upon Avon.
